At their E3 presentation, Nintendo formally revealed the existence of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 Expansion Pass. With the announcement, Nintendo also gave us a little tease as to whom the characters might be. According the Nintendo eShop, the Expansion Pass will be broken up into three packs, each one focusing on a different Marvel property. These three properties are Fantastic Four, X-Men and Marvel Knights. But then, who might the playable characters be? And how many will we get? In this article, I will break down the prime candidates I believe could enter the alliance when the Expansion Pass releases later this year.
For the purpose of this article, I am simply going to focus on the potential characters from the Fantastic Four brand that might appear. However, you can also check out who I think might join the roster from the X-Men or Marvel Knights properties.
The Fantastic Four were once one of Marvel’s most adored properties. However, after the rights were acquired by Fox, and the brand was driven into the ground by three terrible films, Marvel pulled the Fantastic Four from their comic line, and had essentially retired the characters. As such, it was no surprise to discover that the Fantastic Four had zero presence in the upcoming Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. However, thanks the recently completed Disney-Fox buyout, Fantastic Four is back home, and it looks as though Marvel is ready to bring these characters back into the spotlight. For this property, there are really only six potential candidates for characters:
Reid Richards AKA Mister Fantastic is the leader of the Fantastic Four, and could be considered its main character. He was playable in the first two Marvel Ultimate Alliance titles, so he will have plenty of abilities to pull from. There is no doubt that he will be playable when the Fantastic Four content pack releases.
The Invisible Woman
Sue Storm AKA The Invisible Woman is another of the members of the Fantastic Four. Her abilities include being able to turn invisible and create force fields. In Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, this was utilized in a very unique way, and she became one of the most powerful characters to use. Drawing on her past appearances as inspiration, Sue Storm would make another great addition to the game.
The Human Torch
Johnny Storm AKA The Human Torch is another of the members of the Fantastic Four. I had previously talked about my desire for Johnny to be playable during my initial speculation about the roster. In terms of pyro-related characters, we have very few on the roster (other than the recently-revealed Ghost Rider). With Fantastic Four content inbound, Johnny Storm is definitely another top contender to enter the alliance.
Ben Grimm AKA The Thing is the fourth and final member of the Fantastic Four. Easily one of the more beloved members of the team, the Thing is the heavy-hitter we are needing on this roster. Other than the Incredible Hulk, we don’t have much in terms of bruisers, and it is exciting to know that when the Fantastic Four pack hits the game, we’ll have another big hitter to choose from.
Dr. Victor Von Doom is the Fantastic Four’s biggest enemy, and one of the most formidable foes in the entire Marvel universe. Dr. Doom served as the villain of the original Marvel Ultimate Alliance title, and became playable in the DLC for the game. While it is much more likely that we only receive the four members of the team as DLC, it would be a great service to fans to not only add another playable villain, but to add the villain to the alliance. If not, there is always a chance that Dr. Doom can serve as the main antagonist of the story content included in the expansion pass.
The Silver Surfer
The Silver Surfer is the herald of Galactus and one of the reoccurring opponents for both the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. He was playable as a secret character in the original game, and bringing him back for this instalment would be a great addition. In fact, if the story of the expansion pass chooses to use Galactus as a villain, Silver Surfer would tie into that story quite nicely.
While it is of course most likely that we get some or all of the Fantastic Four team and nothing else, it is still fun to speculate who else could show up in this expansion pack. Hopefully, regardless of who is added to the game, that all of these characters show up in some way, shape or form.
